What To Expect

What To Expect

I strive to provide a shoot that is both relaxed and fun for both you and your pet.
Below is a basic rundown of what to expect before, during and after your pet’s shoot.

Where possible I like scheduling a meeting at your home with you and your pet so that they can get to know me and my camera and we can get a feel for each other. This is also a great time to find out what kind of prints you might be interested in, nail down a location for your shoot as well as a date that works for you!

I want your shoot to be a relaxed and fun experience for you and your pet. If you feel calm your pet will definitely respond in kind and feel relaxed and confident.
Shoots are almost always on-location. I prefer shooting dogs in natural environments and besides, we’re spoiled for choice in Cape Town with incredible forests, beaches and mountains to go exploring in together, although if your fondest memories of your pet are at your home and you’d like to capture that, I’d be more than happy to have our shoot at your homestead!

About three weeks after your shoot we will meet either at your home or my studio (whichever you prefer) for me to reveal your edited final images and for you to place any orders for printed products.

Frequently Asked Questions

My dog is not very well behaved. Can you work with that?

I’ve worked with all kinds of dogs at all levels of obedience (or in some cases, disobedience!). The number one thing we can do to make things easier for ourselves is choose a location with as few distractions as possible (I can help with this).

During the session, I use tons of tricks and techniques (and a bucketload of patience) to overcome any training issues your dog might have so we can still get a range of awesome shots.

Please don’t let your dog’s behaviour hold you back from booking a session. Relax, you’re in my capable and uber experienced hands!

I see all the dogs you photograph are off lead, but mine just can’t be let off the leash!

Can I let you in on a little secret? The majority of dogs I photograph are actually on lead! I’ve got a bag o’ tricks up my sleeve to get great images while working with dogs on lead. Thanks to the magic of post production, the lead can be removed from images in a matter of minutes, leaving you with a gorgeous shot. No one will ever know a leash was ever there. Clever, huh? *Please note that harnesses are not removed in post production. I recommend buying a collar especially for the shoot if your pup is usually in a harness.

My dog doesn't have much time left. Do you cater to terminal animals?

I’m so sorry. Our pet’s lives are tragically short. Sunshine Sessions are available for those pets that are at the end of their time with us. They are regular home or location sessions, but I will give every effort to adjust my schedule to squeeze you in as soon as possible.

Please send me an email and I'll arrange a shoot expediciously!

Do you offer gift certificates?

You’re in luck – I offer beautiful custom designed gift certificates that include the session fee plus an order credit for the recipient to spend on prints and products. Find out more about gift certificate pricing and options here.

Do you come to me or do I go to you?

My studio is the wonderful outdoors so in most cases, we’ll meet up at one of my tried-and-trusted locations. Unless we need to shoot at your home due to your dog’s age, health or temperament. If that’s the case, I’ll come to you.

Beautiful locations enhance the look of your images, so I always love to shoot at picturesque parks, beaches, forests or maybe even a trendy urban area if that’s your scene and if your dog is cool with busy or distracting spots. When you book, I’ll send you my Welcome Guide so you can browse my selection of hand-picked locations.

I’ll be there to guide you every step of the way. If you need help deciding, I’ll work with you to determine the best location to suit your dog’s personality and temperament.

Which session type should I choose?

If you have just one dog, you can get to Cape Town for your session, you’re available on weekdays, you don’t mind ordering online and you definitely don’t want an album – then the Dog Days Session will be perfect for you!

If you have two or more dogs, the Top Dog Session will give you a greater variety of images to choose from and the option to order one of my beautiful custom designed albums. You’ll also get more session location options and an in-person viewing session when your images are ready.

Can I be in the photos?

Definitely! I love capturing the special bond between dogs and their people. You can choose to just be in the background or you can specify posed portraits. However, my favourite dog and owner photos are always those candid, natural moments.

Can you take photos of my kids/family during the session?

Since I am predominantly a pet photographer, the focus of my work will always be on the canine models and the bond they share with their people. If you are looking for someone to take child or family portraits where the focus is on the people, let me know and I can recommend an excellent portrait photographer in your area (often they’ll be able to include your pets in a few of the images as well).

Do you offer payment plans?

Sure do! I offer customised, interest-free payment plans on all product orders. You can select the start date and choose to pay an agreed amount per week, fortnight or month. There is no interest or fees added to your total, ever.

You’ll receive your products as soon as your order has been paid in full. You’re always welcome to make extra payments and get your products in your hands sooner!

Do you charge extra for travel?

Top Dog Sessions include travel to locations up to 100km from Cape Town Metro. Dog Days Sessions include travel to locations up to 20km from Cape Town Metro. Additional km's charged at R7.21/km

Do you photograph pets other than dogs?

Indeed I do! The majority of my clients are dogs but I also photograph other four legged friends – you’ll spot a few cats and horses in my portfolio, too.

I have more than three dogs, can I have them all photographed?

A Top Dog Session includes three dogs and can accommodate up to four dogs. To include the fourth dog, just add R500 to the session fee. This allows for the extra time I spend shooting and editing. You’ll view approximately 20 extra images when you add an extra dog. If you have five or more dogs, please get in touch and I’ll provide a custom quote.

The Painted Wolf or African Wild Dog is Africa’s most persecuted predator.
It is also its most elusive and enigmatic.

Five percent of all our sales are donated to the Painted Dog Conservation group to help with conservation of the species, education initiatives, and raising awareness about the painted dog worldwide.

“Suddenly they were there, lean, ghost-like shapes in the moonlight with Mickey Mouse ears; wearing their dappled coats of black, tan and gold, like ink spots on blotting paper.”
